Huge hog molly commits to Hoosiers

One of Ohio’s best commits to Indiana

We recently had the opportunity to interview the biggest and best Hoosier recruit from the class of 2017.  Meet Derrius Mullins – a giant defensive tackle who’s ranked the 18th best football player in Ohio – which puts him among some very elite company considering his home state is on a very short list of football hubs similar to California, Texas and Florida.

To be top ranked in Ohio means you’re one of the best, it’s too bad for Ohio they had to lose one of their top recruits to a team scheduled to play their flagship university – OSU.

He was even recruited by Buckeyes, but ultimately committed to Indiana because of their genuine sense of community and pride around campus.  The enthusiasm Derrius shows for his school reminds me of DeeJay Dallas and the Miami Hurricanes.  It’s been said Dallas is one of the schools best ambassadors for The U; however, the same can be said about Derrius Mullins and Indiana.  He wears his school pride on his sleeve and lets everyone know it.

Speaking with Mullins made me take a 2nd look at Hoosier country and I was reminded of how much history Indiana has to offer. They’ve built a program based on community and I can see why he’s so proud to be a part of it.

Highlights from my conversation with the next big star at Indiana:

Q: Who’s your biggest influence when it comes to football?

A: “My mom is my biggest influence for football. My mom gives me strength everyday by just being my mom.  She survived a fire and had open heart surgery – she’s the definition of true strength and she motivates me everyday.”

Q: What made you chose Indiana over other schools?

A: “The Indiana coaching staff and the players feel like a family and  their just cool to be around. When my family visited this past summer they showed so much affection to them it just felt like the type of community I want to be a part of. The commits played a huge role in my recruitment and Indiana is not too far from Columbus.”

Q: What do you plan on majoring in at Indiana in the fall?

A: “I plan on majoring in something within the fields of finance or communications.”

Q: When you’re not playing football, what other hobbies or interests do you have?

A: “Outside of school and football, I’m usually just hanging  out with my friends or at home relaxing,  watching sports or sports shows”

Q: You obviously love sports – if you didn’t play football, which sport would you be playing?

A: “Probably track because that’s my second love”

Q: Who’s your favorite athlete of all-time?

A: Lebron James

We all look forward to Derrius playing for Indiana over the next several years and in the meantime you can follow him on Twitter @derrius71
