East Lansing, MI — I’d like to offer a fresh perspective on how to look at the Michigan State football program. Let’s not focus on the current 2-7 record, but rather instead look forward to what the program has in store for Spartan fans over the next several seasons.
The incoming class of 2017 shows a lot of promise on the offensive side of the ball, particularly in the passing game. One of the recruits Spartan fans are most excited about is Rocky Lombardi. He’s a 3-Star quarterback – just like Lamar Jackson – stands at 6’3” and has one of the coolest names in football.
According to urban legend, he played QB in a 7v7 game with varsity level talent well before he was ever in high school. He threw over and around the defenders until one of them accused the “freshman” of being lucky and was quickly humbled to learn the “freshman” was actually only in 6th grade.
If his name hasn’t got your attention yet, his ability to play quarterback will demand it. And that’s why having a QB like Lombardi is so vital to putting a productive offense together. Rocky will have weapons like Hunter Rison and several other 4-Star targets at his disposal and before you know it MSU games will go from a Saturday disappointment to a high-scoring spectacle.
We recently caught up with the star quarterback for an interview on everything from football to politics to cars. Here are the highlights from our interview with Rocky Lombardi:
Q: Do you think you have one of the coolest names in college football? And are you related to Vince Lombardi?
A: “I am not related to him and a name doesn’t get you very far so I’m more concerned about making a name for myself.”
Q: From the perspective of being a head coach, what’s your opinion on running up the score, for example, winning a game 70- 3?
A: “I Mean for me if I were a head coach I wouldn’t do it but at the end of the day it’s the defense’s job to stop the offense and if they can’t do that that’s their problem.”
Q: Who’s your biggest influence when it comes to football?
A: “Probably my father who taught me the game and coached me growing up”
Q: Did you grow up watching or rooting for any particular college football team?
A: “Um not really I was born in Ann Arbor we kinda have some Michigan blood in us but growing up I was mostly a Texas fan because of Vince Young and Colt McCoy but after he left I didn’t really have a team.”
FG: “I love that team too. Colt and his wide receiver were on the same team since they were in Pop Warner.”
A: “McCoy/Shipley combo was money! And it would be awesome if Oliver Martin commits to MSU, we’d be just like them.”
Q: Who should win the Heisman Trophy?
A: “Jabrill or Deshaun.”
Q: Not Jackson?
A: “I don’t know, I think he’s a good player but I don’t think he’s as complete of a quarterback as Watson. No question he’s a hell of a player but I don’t think he’s a better QB than Watson and I don’t think he’s a better athlete than Peppers if that makes sense”
Q: Who’s your favorite player of all-time?
A: Tom Brady and maybe Ray Lewis.
Q: Which candidate did you like more, Trump or Hillary?
A: “Not a huge fan of either but I am a republican so I voted for Trump. I liked his economic plans a little more than Hillary’s which I think is one of our biggest issues right now.”
Q: Who’s your favorite president of all time?
A: “Teddy Roosevelt. I am kind of a tree-hugger to an extent so I really like what he did with the national parks and the big stick diplomacy”
Q: What’s your favorite car of all-time?
A: ” I like the 53 Bel Air or 66 Mustang those are two old cars I like and my Grandpa actually has the mustang in red and it’s sweet”
Q: Outside of football and school, what are your favorite hobbies and interests?
A: “I love to go golfing or pretty much anything outside I also enjoy hanging out with my friends.”
Q: What do you plan on majoring in at Michigan State in the fall?
A: “I will probably study something in business.”
Q: What made you choose the Michigan State Spartans over all your other offers?
A: “I enjoyed the family atmosphere and also they have done a really good job with quarterbacks recently.”
Q: If you could travel anywhere in world, where would you visit?
A: “One place doesn’t come to mind, but probably somewhere in Europe.”
Q: Where in the NFL would you like to play?
A: “If I could play for any NFL team i wouldn’t care who but I would like an experienced QB on the team so that I could learn a lot about the game.”
