Brunswick brings the heat to South Beach

Miami, FL — As talented as south Florida might be when it comes to football, The U still needs to import some of the nation’s best athletes in order to turn the Canes back into the well-oiled machine fans got so accustomed to rooting for over the past few decades.  And if you take a look at Mark Richt’s east coast pipelines, Miami is reeling in some legitimately big fish that could play a big role in getting the Canes get back to form.

One of the hotspots on coach Richt’s recruiting map is Brunswick, GA.  With a modest population of just over 15,000, it’s a bit surprising to learn how many professional athletes have grown up there – including several active NFL players as well as the top pick in the 2001 NBA draft Kwame Brown.

And the next wave of Brunswick ballers included the monster, hog mollie Zalontae Hillery and all-star playmaker Deejay Dallas – who have both committed to play for Miami in the fall.  Before becoming teammates their sophomore year of high school, the two recruits used to play against each other as early as 8th grade and formed a friendship that played an influential role in the recruitment process.

In a recent interview with, Zalontae told us he considered Deejay Dallas an unofficial expert on college football describing him by saying, “he sort of knows everything about collegiate football so I sort of leaned towards him for helping me pick a college that is good in the football department but my main focus is on education and they’re a private school, so that had a lot to with my decision well.”

Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given in your life?

A: “Best advice given to me recruiting was was “be my own man and follow my heart because half of the time people tell you to go where they wanted to go if they ever were given the opportunity. Don’t live out their dream, create your legacy”- Uncle Aubrey.

Q: Who’s your biggest influence when it comes to football?

A: “My biggest influence would be my aunt. She saw greatness in me before I ever even thought of football and she still motivates me and supports me even though she’s really ill right now her enthusiasm and support didn’t change a bit”

Q: What made you choose Miami over your other offers?

A: “And for the U, I’m not all the way committed yet but I am verbally committed and currently waiting for signing day for the final say so but I committed because it’s a nice city and the coaching environment makes it feel like home with all the love passion the coaches actually have for each and every player”

Q: Have you decided on what you’d like to major in at Miami in the fall?

A: “My major will either be in architecture or biochemical engineering”

Q: Who’s the best player you’ve ever played against?

A: “The best player I’ve ever played against would have to be Dedrick Mills..he used to play linebacker last year for the Ware County Gators but now he’s a true freshman running back for Georgia tech.”
