Patterson’s next playmaker

Fort Worth, TX — No matter who’s at the helm for the Horned Frogs next season, there’s a high likelihood it’s going to be a former recipient of the Texas Gatorade Player of the Year award.  TCU’s incumbent starting quarterback, Kenny Hill won the award back in 2012 and their most highly anticipated recruit Shawn Robinson just took home the trophy this past season.

And the recent news about the second string quarterback Foster Sawyer transferring schools could result in the two former players of the year battling it out for the starting position.

The two quarterbacks have a clear experience gap with Hill, a redshirt senior and Robinson, a true freshman – but with the recurring theme of starting freshman QBs having so much success lately in college football – all bets are off.

When the Horned Frogs originally started recruiting Robinson they told him he would most likely redshirt his first year, but since then they’ve had their worst home record in the Patterson era and lost their second string quarterback, so it wouldn’t be surprising to hear the coaches might have a change of plans.

According to an interview with the Star-Telegram published back on December 20th, Robinson states “The plan was to redshirt. They said I was going to redshirt” but then Shawn continues by saying, “But I’m not sure. They haven’t said it in a while. But we’ll see.”

It sounds like TCU is going to be keeping all their options open and Frog fans will be in wait-and-see mode until Patterson makes his decision.

Shawn Robison finished his senior season at DeSoto in record-breaking fashion by winning the first state title in DeSoto football history.  His versatility kept defenders on their toes all year while he threw for 3,416 yards and 28 touchdowns in addition to rushing for 1,439 yards and 19 touchdowns.  It goes without saying the Horned Frogs are in for a treat once Robinson learns the offense and officially earns the starting spot.

Q: What made you choose TCU over all of the other schools you received offers from?

A: “The relationships with the coaching staff. Looking at how coach Cumbie had developed Trevone Boykin and trusting that he can make me into the quarterback that I want to become.”

Q: What makes you think that TCU is a championship caliber team?

A: “Well the coaching staff first and foremost, they know some ball! And the quality of players we have there already and the ones we are getting plays a big part of why I feel like TCU is a championship caliber team! Coach Patterson does a great job bringing everyone in and getting us together as a team.”

Q:  Have you decided what you’d like to major in?

A: “I’m thinking engineering but I might switch to business.”

Q: Which NFL team would you most like to play for?

A: “Cowboys just because they’re my hometown team.”
