Austin, TX – With the 2018 college football season only weeks away, Texas fans have two very good reasons to be looking forward to this year’s run at the CFB playoff. First of all, there’s a very short list of defensive coordinators that are considered to be head coaching material and Todd Orlando is one of them.
Orlando’s first season with UT was an exceptional one – as he can be credited with orchestrating one of the most impressive defensive turnarounds we’ve seen in college football in quite some time, by improving the Longhorn’s ranking 53 spots from 94th to 41st in total defense, and 61 spots from 90th to 29th in scoring defense.
In short, Todd Orlando greatly increases Tom Herman’s chances of taking the Longhorns to playoffs, but he’s probably only going to be the defensive coordinator for another season or two. Time to strike while the iron is hot.
The second reason Texas is in a uniquely strong position this season is that by all accounts the Longhorns just signed their best recruiting class in school history. To make matters even more optimistic, the biggest stars in this year’s class are on the defensive side of the ball, smack dab under the direction of Mr. Todd Orlando.
Don’t be surprised if freshman standouts Caden Sterns, BJ Foster and Demarvion Overshown become household names across Texas before the end of the season.
The 2018 player rankings for the state of Texas show just how much Tom Herman was able to lock down the top prospects in his home state. The list begins with an astounding 6 commitments out of the top 7 players, losing only one recruit to Bama.
When the dust finally settled on this year’s recruiting trail, the Horns had hooked 19 players throughout the state and 11 of whom were ranked in the top 15.
In fact, there’s such a high concentration of talent in the defensive backfield it’s been rumored the savage sensation, DeMarvion Overshown might be moved from safety to linebacker. Such a move would typically be a difficult transition for most defensive backs, but if Overshown has proven to be anything so far it’s versatile – as he boasts an unusual combination of size and speed.
